Born august 16th 1922, Lieutenant George Arthur Knowland joined the Royal Norfolk regiment in 1940 as a private. Commissioned by the end of 1941 he was then attached to the number one commando unit. On January 31st 1945, in command of just 24 commandos, his unit defended hill 170 against a vicious assault of over 300 hardened Japanese troops. Holding their ground for more than 12
